Banking and Currency: Banking in Northern Cyprus has a well-developed system that caters for individuals and businesses. The banking system has close ties to many foreign banks including HSBC. Opening a bank account is easy and you will have the option of selecting special accounts in which you can keep your money in its original currency. For Example Sterling, Euros, US Dollars.
Education: As the British community is growing, so rapidly there are now several English-speaking schools. As you would expect from a modern education system, all exams that can be attained in the UK can also be taken in Cyprus. (For example GCSE.)
Medical:
Accident and Emergency facilities are available in hospitals across Northern Cyprus and many local hospitals have been extensively modernised in recent years. Hospitals can be found in Lefkosa, Girne, Guzelyurt and Gazi magusa that can handle most emergencies. However, many British homeowners do take out Private Medical Insurance through international medical insurers. It is possible to receive private treatment in various hospitals. Charges for various treatments and operations can be obtained before admission. Treatment is usually at a fraction of a price from the European partners.
Shopping:
Shopping can be truly appreciated on the island, with a variety of top brands and low cut bargains you are guaranteed to find anything you are looking for. Most supermarkets cater well-known brands and Turkish produced goods can be bought at a fraction of the price of imported goods.
Transport: Due to the British colonial rule, Cypriots drive on the left. The easiest option of transportation is by car. Car hire is cheap and reliable. Alternatively, taxis are very reasonably priced. The main airport is Ercan airport. There is a regular ferry service to Turkey throughout the year, the fastest being two and a half hours from Girne to Tasucu.
Climate:
Renowned for its pleasant Mediterranean climate, Cyprus enjoys long dry summers and mild winters. The sun shines for approximately 340 days each year and the light rainy season is confined to the period between November and March.
During the islands mild winter, almond trees blossom and Citrus fruit ripens while the mountains are covered in a blanket of white snow.
With milder temperatures in the coastal areas, it is possible to spend a morning basking on the sun-drenched beaches, swimming in the dazzling blue sea and then visit the snow covered Troodos Mountains for an afternoon skiing!
