Land in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC) is safe to buy
It is always important when purchasing land or property to make adequate enquiries using an independent solicitor/lawyer and to know (understand) the various “Title Deeds” that are used in Northern Cyprus.
In the TRNC there are three types of title deeds that the purchaser must be aware of.
Freehold Title Deeds
Foreign Title Deed: The pre 1974 owners of these properties/land were/are foreign nationals. These title deeds are recognized world wide, even by the Greek Cypriot administration.
Turkish Title Deed : The pre 1974 owners of these properties are/were Turkish Cypriots. These title deeds are recognized world wide, even by the Greek Cypriot administration.
TRNC Exchange Title Deed (Esdger): The pre 1974 owners of these properties/land were Greek Cypriots. The TRNC Government gave this land to the Turkish Cypriots in exchange for the properties/land that they owned in south Cyprus before 1974, and which they were forced to leave behind. The Government assessed the value of property/land left behind, and allocated the same amount of land in the north, with the understanding of forfeiting all rights to the original land in the south.
